When should a whole wall be skim coated
A whole wall should be skim coated when roughness, torn paper, old texture, wallpaper damage, or many small repairs affect the full surface. If the problem is spread across the wall, spot spackling can leave a visible patchwork after paint.
Douglas checks whether the wall is sound before coating it. A skim coat can smooth the face, but it will not make loose plaster solid, fix swollen drywall, or straighten a wall that waves because of framing or old material underneath.
