Taping reinforces the seams; finishing makes the surface look smooth enough for primer and paint. Taping embeds paper or mesh tape in compound over joints and inside corners, while finishing builds wider coats over seams, fasteners, corners, and patches.

Customers often ask for taping and finishing together because both are needed for a paint-ready wall. A taped seam without finish coats can still show, and finish compound without sound tape underneath will not fix a moving or failed joint.

Finish level changes how much compound, feathering, sanding, and surface treatment the drywall receives. Level 4 is common for many painted walls, while Level 5 adds a thin coat over the full surface for areas where light or paint will reveal small differences.
