Drywall taping is the seam-reinforcement step that turns separate panels into one continuous surface ready for finishing coats.

Paper tape or mesh tape for drywall seams

Paper tape is the default for many seams and inside corners because it is strong, creases cleanly, and does not stretch; mesh tape is mainly used with the right compound for patches and some flat seams. The best choice depends on the joint, the product instructions, and the condition of the drywall.

Douglas does not choose tape from an online rule alone. He looks at whether the seam is flat, inside a corner, part of a repair, or near a crack, then uses the tape and compound combination that fits that joint.

Why do taped seams show through paint

Taped seams show through paint because of thin feathering, compound shrinkage before coats dry, tape that was not fully embedded, raking light, paint sheen, or skipped primer on mixed drywall and compound surfaces. The seam may be structurally taped and still look visible if the finish was too narrow or rushed.

Fixing a visible seam starts with the cause. A ridge may need sanding and wider finish coats, a hollow or bubbled seam may need tape repair, and a flashing paint line may need primer and a better paint plan after the drywall is corrected.

Can you tape drywall someone else hung

Yes, we often take over owner-hung or other-crew drywall; first we check gaps, screw depth, loose edges, damaged paper, and missing support because those decide whether it can be taped as-is. Good tape work cannot fully hide poor hanging.

If the drywall is ready, Douglas tapes the seams and corners and then moves into finish coats. If the board needs corrections, he will explain what has to be fixed before compound hides a problem that could crack or show later.

Questions about this work

Can a drywall crack be fixed without tape?

Some tiny surface flaws can be filled, but cracks at seams or corners usually need tape and compound so the joint is reinforced instead of only covered.

Is drywall taping enough to make the wall paint-ready?

No. Taping is the reinforcement step. Finish coats, sanding, and sometimes a higher finish level are still needed before primer and paint.

Can you tape owner-hung drywall?

Possibly. Douglas reviews the board, seams, fasteners, and corners first, then confirms whether corrections are needed before taping begins.

What should I do if seams are visible after painting?

Visible seams can come from shallow finishing, poor feathering, movement, lighting, or paint sheen. The joint should be assessed rather than simply painted again.

Does ceiling taping need extra care?

Yes. Ceiling seams often sit under strong light and are viewed from below, so weak tape or narrow finish coats can become obvious after paint.
