Water-damaged drywall repair rebuilds wall areas affected by leaks after the source is fixed and the damaged material is ready to be removed or finished.

When can wet drywall be saved

Wet drywall can sometimes be saved when it dries properly, stays firm, and is not contaminated, swollen, crumbling, or sagging. Soft or damaged board needs replacement assessment instead of a cosmetic patch.

Douglas asks when the water happened, whether the source is fixed, and what kind of water was involved. Clean-water staining is different from flood or sewage-related damage, and remediation questions should be handled before drywall is closed.

What if a sink or fixture pulled from the wall

If a sink or fixture pulled from the wall, the repair has to address the missing support before drywall is patched. Douglas repaired one bathroom sink wall where the sink had been attached only to sheetrock with no stud or backing.

He installed proper studs and solid wood backing, reinstalled drywall, and taped and spackled it correctly. Without backing, a neat surface patch would not solve the reason the fixture failed.

Should water-damaged drywall use moisture-resistant board

Yes. We use moisture-resistant board on every water-damage rebuild. It doesn't fix a leak, so the source still has to be repaired and the area dried before new board goes in, but it holds up better if moisture shows up again.

We also always recommend adding an access door near plumbing. If there's ever another leak or a valve to check, a plumber can open the door instead of cutting into the finished wall or ceiling.

Questions about this work

Can wet drywall dry out and stay?

Sometimes, but drying alone does not prove it can stay. The board's strength, contamination risk, and conditions behind it need assessment.

When should water-damaged drywall be cut out?

Soft, swollen, crumbling, sagging, contaminated, or weakened drywall usually needs replacement assessment rather than a cosmetic patch.

Can Douglas fix backing behind drywall?

Yes. When missing support is part of the drywall problem, we can discuss backing before rebuilding the wall. On one sink repair, Douglas installed proper studs and solid wood backing before rebuilding the drywall.

Do you handle sewage or flood remediation?

No. Contaminated water, sewage, flood cleanup, mold remediation, and drying are separate specialist responsibilities before drywall repair.
